Tippett, Sir Michael. (1905-1998). Typed Letter to Egon Wellesz. 1 page. November 16, 1951. An interesting letter from the important English composer to the Austrian composer and musicologist, Egon Wellesz (1885-1974).

Tippett explains that the B.B.C. "is going to do a kind of 'obituary' of Schoenberg, which will last over three months, from January to March 1952. Within this time a great deal of Schoenberg's music will be performed, but also a good many talks, setting the music within a much wider cultural background going from Vienna before the 1st World War to America after the 2nd." Tippett is "editorial in charge of the whole thing," and asks Wellesz if he "could make a specific contribution to this 'obituary'...some account of Schoenberg's views and methods of setting words, on the lines of his own article 'Das Verheltnis zum Text.' It wouldn't matter if this were done in such a way to come out in your own experiment in setting English, as for example in Gerard Manley Hopkins." Some light creases, otherwise excellent.

Egon Wellesz was a member of Schoenberg's Verein für Musikalische Privataufführungen after World War 1 and was the author of the the first Schoenberg biography (Vienna, 1921).
