[Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Felix. (1809–1847)]. Original 1851 Leipzig Conservatory Program on the Anniversary of the Composer's Death. Original program from a Leipzig Conservatorium der Musik concert on 4th November, 1851. 2 pp., scattered foxing, mild surface creases, overall very fine. 7.25 x 9.5 inches (18.5 x 24 cm.)

An all-Mendelssohn program, performed on the fourth anniversary of the composer's passing, the works include selections from the unfinished oratorio "Christus," Variations sérieuses, the lieder "Fahr Wohl" and "Lieblingsplätzchen" performed from Mendelssohn's own manuscript, a quartet for piano with violin, viola and cello, and the four-voice lied "Ruhethal". Performers are unspecified but were likely students and faculty of the music school.

The Leipzig Conservatory was founded in 1843 by Felix Mendelssohn. The first of its kind in Germany, it soon became renowned, thanks to the extraordinary faculty assembled, including such figures as Moritz Hauptmann (cantor at St Thomas’s), Ignaz Moscheles (Grieg’s teacher, a piano virtuoso and expert on the music of Beethoven), Ferdinand David (leader of the Gewandhaus Orchestra) and Robert Schumann. At the same time, it enjoyed a reputation as one of the most progressive in Europe and pupils were taken on from all over Europe, and even from America.
