Oil on canvas, signed at the foot and dated 1860. 29 x 36 inches; 73 x 92 cm. Set in a fine gilt wood frame measuring 44 x 24.5 x 1.5 inches (112 x 52 x 4 cm) and in very fine condition.
A sensitive portrait of a young and elegantly attired violinist, in a casual pose with his instrument and bow at his side, standing between a duet violin stand with sheet music and a red chair with a small dog seated on the cushion. His gaze is open and direct, as he seems to pause from his practice, perhaps inviting us to listen in when he resumes. Little is known about the artist. He was born in Lyon and exhibited there in the Salons between 1857 and 1887, specializing in portraits, interiors and still lifes.
