[Pianist] Leclerc, Denis. . Portrait of a Musician.
Evocative original portrait drawing of a nineteenth-century musician by Denis Leclerc, dated 1839. Charcoal, pencil watercolor. The young male musician is wearing small glasses, seated at a fortepiano and holding a piece of sheet music whose title is just legible: "Fantaisie concertante pour piano et violon sur l'air de [?] / op. 18." The subject has been tentatively captioned at the foot of the mat as Franz Liszt, although we do not believe it is Liszt. Sight size 6.5 x 9 inches, matted to 10.25 x 14 inches (26 x 35.5 cm). Mat rather toned; mounting remnants on the verso and some edge wear; overall very good.
Notes on the verso of the mat in French identify the artist as Denis Leclerc, a portrait and historical painter admitted to the Salon in 1877.
