Striking original woodcut in colors of a conductor and his violin section, in the midst of a performance. The conductor depicted is to our view almost certainly Richard Strauss. Text in pencil at the foot: "Conductor / Proof / Jules." Sight size 17.5 x 8 inches (44 x 8 cm), nicely framed to an overall size of 23.5 x 13.75 inches (60 x 35 cm). Fine.

The American artist Mervin Jules was born in Baltimore and studied at the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts. He was artist-in-residence at Smith College from 1945 to 1946 and a professor from 1946 to 1969. In 1969 he became chairman of the art department at the City College of New York.
