Rimsky-Korsakov wrote the libretto, which he based on the first act of the play \u003ci style=\"\"\u003eThe Maid of Pskov\u003c\/i\u003e by Lev Alexandrovich Mey. The opera was composed in 1898 from material omitted from the second version of Rimsky-Korsakov's setting of the play as an opera. \u003cbr style=\"\"\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr style=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003eAnatoly Lyadov was a composition student of Rimsky-Korsakov—although he was expelled for missing classes in 1876!
