[Murder with Music] [Sissle, Noble. (1889–1975)]. 1941 "Murder with Music" Movie Poster.
Murder With Music. Bob Howard, Noble Sissle's Orchestra, Skippy Williams' Orchestra and an All-Star Colored Cast. 21 x 47 inches one sheet black and white movie poster. Linen-backed and in good condition, with right top corner reattached, small areas of paper loss top middle and middle areas.
An Alfred N. Sack Enterprises thriller with music by, among others, the wonderful Noble Sissle, who together with Eubie Blake wrote and produced the first African American musical, Shuffle Along. Produced by Century Productions, the film was a low-budget race film starring Sissle and his Orchestra, singer Bob Howard (1906–1986), sax player Skippy Williams (1916–1994), peppy Nellie Hill (1922–?), and various dancers. This scarce poster features Sissle, pictured in the lower right.
The film is mostly pure nonsense, at least the plot, which is just in the way of the music and absurd comedy. The music shorts include “Murder in Swingtime,” “Black and Tan Fantasy,” “Symphony in Black,” and “Ain’t Misbehaving.” More of a variety film, it is ostensibly a story of jealousy, murder, and mistaken identity, where night club singer Nellie Hill has many suitors including an escaped convict, a piano player and a newspaper man. One is killed.
