Autograph musical manuscript of the American-born composer's Piano Trio in D minor, op. 22, inscribed on the title page to his friend, historian John Fiske, and signed and dated 1874 on the first page of music. Small pencil corrections and annotations in pp. 1–7, including accidentals, added notes in the violin and cello parts, change of note lengths, erased chords; notes erased and changed on p. 49; one full measure struck through in pen on p. 45. 53 pp. Hardcover, 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Half bound in red and brown pebbled leather with gold lettering. Spine and corners rubbed with some scratches; toning; structurally sound and overall very good.

John Knowles Paine was the first American-born composer to achieve fame for large-scale orchestral music. The senior member of a group of composers collectively known as the Boston Six, Paine was one of those responsible for the first significant body of concert music by composers from the United States. The Boston Six's other five members were Amy Beach, Arthur Foote, Edward MacDowell, George Chadwick, and Horatio Parker.
