The Alsatian painter is now considered one of the most important German still life painters of his time. Long forgotten and unsung compared to Dutch and Flemish still life painters of the European Baroque period, his works were rediscovered by art historians only after 1930.  His works are characterized by their focus on a single or small group of objects.
