Servais, Adrien-François. (1807–1866). Original CDV Photograph.
A rare carte de visite portrait of one of the most influential cellists of the nineteenth century, known by his contemporaries (including Berlioz) as "the Paganini of the cello." He is shown in a reproduction of a caricature portrait where below his face, a stick-like body simultaneously plays the cello, spins a thread of musical notes on a spinning wheel, and rocks a cradle. Issued by Charles Gombert, with photographer's insignia on the verso. Light toning and soiling; overall very good. 2.5 x 4 inches (6.3 x 10.6 cm).
