Wagner, Cosima. (1837-1930). Autograph Letter from Bayreuth to Vincent d'Indy. An interesting letter from the daughter of Franz Liszt who was later the wife of Richard Wagner and, after his death, the director of the Bayreuth Festival for 31 years.

1 page in 12o. Dated 18 July, 1873. Addressed to the young French composer, Vincent d'Indy (1851-1931), "Madame Richard Wagner" sends him the pass she had promised, hoping that it will permit him entrance to the rehearsals of "Lohengrin" or "Die Meistersinger." In a very neat hand, possibly that of D'Indy, the name Cosima Wagner and 1873 have been penned in the top right corner. The date in the hand of Cosima at the conclusion of the letter, appears to be 1879, which would make more sense as the Festspielhaus did not open until 1876. D'Indy attended the 1876 premiere of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festpielhaus and later acknowledged that the formative experience was one of the major influences on his musical thinking and composition.
