During World War II, he served in the Psychological Warfare Division of SHAEF, and gave a legendary concert to thousands of terrified refugees stranded in a cave near Naples during a bombing raid. Spalding is also known for the American premiers of the Elgar and Dohnanyi concerti and his fascinating autobiography, \u003ci style=\"\"\u003eRise to Follow\u003c\/i\u003e. \u003cbr style=\"\"\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr style=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003eThe French violinist Marcel Chailley (1881–1936) studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and in 1908 married the pianist Céliny Richez, with whom he frequently performed. Together, the couple led summer music courses at their home in Seignelay, where students included Ivry Gitlis, Lola Bobesco and Denise Soriano. They were associated with many important French musicians of the early twentieth century.
