Dohnányi, Ernö. (1877–1960). Autograph Letter . An interesting letter from the important Hungarian composer, conductor, and pianist. On two pages, folded out and ideal for display. Dated 11-27-1929, he writes in German to Mr. Levinson of the San Francisco Symphony regarding the departure of conductor, Alfred Hertz. In full:

"I hear that at the end of this season Alfred Hertz is retiring from his post for good. Just in case you are of the same opinion today as 3 years ago and would like to see me at the head of the S. Francisco Orchestra, I am writing to inform you that due to my obligations in Budapest I am no longer in the position of accepting an engagement for an entire season, but would be available for two to three months in the winter. So if it could be arranged that I take on part of the concerts (preferably the second half), I would be very pleased to hear from you. With my best compliments to you and Mrs. Levinson, Your devoted, Ernst von Dohnani."
