Khachaturian composed \u003ci style=\"\"\u003eSpartacus \u003c\/i\u003ein 1954, and was awarded a Lenin Prize for the composition that same year. It was first staged at the Kirov Theatre in Leningrad in 1956, with choreography by Leonid Yakobson, but had more success in a revised form performed at the Bol'shoy in Moscow in 1968.
