The volume contains four solo and duo cantatas, some with violin. The first of the four cantatas\u003cspan style=\"background-color: white;\"\u003e does not appear in literature on Bernier and may be the work of a Regnauld or Rignauld.  C\u003c\/span\u003eontents as follows: \u003ci\u003eLa Vengeance \u003c\/i\u003e(for solo alto and violin on a text by Jean-Baptiste Rousseau titled \"Les Filets de Vulcain\", 31 pp.); \u003ci\u003eBacchus \u003c\/i\u003e(for solo bass and violin, published in Bernier's fourth volume of cantatas in 1703, 33 pp.); \u003ci\u003eIris et Daphné \u003c\/i\u003e(for two sopranos, published as \u003ci\u003eLes Nimphes de Diane\u003c\/i\u003e in 1703, 37 pp.); and \u003ci\u003eJupiter et Europe\u003c\/i\u003e (for soprano and bass with two violins, also published in Bernier's fourth volume of cantatas, 51 pp.) All cantatas are written in a bold, clear hand throughout, with some evidence of more than one copyist's hand. Full brown leather with gilt decoration to the spine and edges of the boards, partially worn off; spine label reads \"Canta de Berni.\" Marbled endpapers. Slight splitting at the rear gutter, but overall sound and in fine condition. 10 x 15 inches (25.5 x 38.3 cm).\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr style=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003eThe French composer, harpsichordist, and theorist Nicolas Bernier succeeded Marc-Antoine Charpentier as \u003cem style=\"\"\u003emaître de musique\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e of the Sainte-Chapelle, and later took a post as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem style=\"\"\u003esous-maître de musique\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e at the Chapelle Royale alongside \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eAndré Campra and Charles-Hubert Gervais, succeeding Michel-Richard de Lalande. Highly influenced by Italian music, he balanced the French and Italian tastes in his cantatas, motets, and other choral works. As well as using all the procedures found in Morin's \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"hit highlight\" style=\"\"\u003ecantatas\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e, he included in his \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem style=\"\"\u003eairs\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e some of the earliest examples in \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"hit highlight\" style=\"\"\u003eFrench\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e music of the new ritornello structure.
