Gillespie visited Pakistan as part of a 1956 State Department-organized tour that included stops in Iran, Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, Yugoslavia, Turkey and Greece. He was a hit with audiences, and later described by Newsweek as "an extraordinary kind of roving American ambassador of goodwill."
