In his essay on the Pleyel Collection at UCLA (which holds the only other recorded copy of this edition), Malcolm S. Cole focuses on the problems presented by the present edition: "A set of string quartets - 'Oeuvre[18me]' is inked on the title page; 'Opera. 12' is printed inside the music - issued both with and without imprint by Artaria [information kindly supplied by Dr. Benton] contains three compositions, two of which (C Major, F Major) contain fugal movements. The first quartet of the set (Eb), however, bears a striking resemblance to the third quartet (also in Eb) of the Prince of Wales set (called Op. 20 by Forster). Although the incipits are identical, it becomes apparent in the course of the exposition that the two different compositions are involved." (Notes, 2nd Ser. Vol. 28, No. 2. Dec. 1972, p. 228)
