His career began at age 14, drawing sports cartoons and his comic strip about a dog,\u003ci\u003e Homeless Hector\u003c\/i\u003e, for the Chicago Daily News in 1899. \u003cspan style=\"line-height: 1.42857;\"\u003eIn 1909, he was hired by Arthur Brisbane to work for William Randolph Hearst's New York Evening Journal.
