Folding creases, two small losses to the verso, but otherwise in fine condition. 5.5 x 9 inches (14.2 x 22.8 cm).\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr style=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e\"During his years in Weimar (1854–63), \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"hit highlight\" style=\"\"\u003ePohl\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e helped Brendel edit the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem style=\"\"\u003eNeue Zeitschrift für Musik\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e and the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem style=\"\"\u003eAngregungen für Kunst, Leben und Wissenschaft\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e (1856–61)... \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eLiszt later expressed his gratitude for \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"hit highlight\" style=\"\"\u003ePohl\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e’s ‘faithful and noble devotion … to the Weimar Progressive Period in the years 1849–58’ (letter of 12 September 1884). Wagner was appreciative of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"hit highlight\" style=\"\"\u003ePohl\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e’s championship; later, however, coolness arose over \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"hit highlight\" style=\"\"\u003ePohl\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e’s published view that Wagner had derived his chromatic harmony in \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem style=\"\"\u003eTristan\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e from Liszt. Though not a particularly insightful critic (he was accused of being a ‘scribbler’), \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"hit highlight\" style=\"\"\u003ePohl\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e worked hard and proved himself to be a reliable partisan, doing much to arouse interest in his chosen composers. Particularly valuable were his German translations of Berlioz’s prose writings and some of Liszt’s articles from the 1850s. He also wrote some poetry, a novel (\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem style=\"\"\u003eRichard Wiegand\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e) based on Wagner, some songs and instrumental pieces.
