McCarthy, Eugene J. (1916–2005) [Monteux Barendse, Nancie. (1917–2013)] [Monteux, Pierre. (1875–1964)]. Typed Letter Signed from the 1968 Presidential Campaign. Typed letter signed from the long-time Minnesota congressman and presidential candidate to Nancie [Monteux] Barendse, daughter of the great French conductor Pierre Monteux, dated July 22, 1968 and thanking Barendse for her support in his presidential campaign. 1 p. on United States Senate letterhead. One folding crease, otherwise in fine condition. 6.25 x 8 inches (15.7 x 20.7 cm). From the estate of Nancie Monteux Barendse.

The focus of McCarthy's presidential campaign was his support for a swift end to the Vietnam War through a withdrawal of American forces. The campaign appealed to youths who were tired of the establishment and dissatisfied with government. Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey's organization was too strong for McCarthy to overcome, and his anti-war campaign was split after the late entrance of Senator George McGovern of South Dakota just ahead of the Democratic National Convention. Despite winning the popular vote, McCarthy lost to Humphrey at the convention amidst protests and riots.

The daughter from a previous marriage of Doris Hodgkins Monteux, Monteux's second wife, Nancie Monteux was adopted by Monteux as a child. After her adopted father's death, she became the director of the Pierre Monteux School for conductors.
