Respighi, Ottorino. (1879-1936). "Pines of Rome" - Autograph Musical Quotation. An excellent autograph musical quotation of the Italian composer's most famous work, Pini di Roma, penned while aboard the Italian ocean liner Giulio Cesare in 1928. Respighi has written the first two bars of the evocative clarinet solo from the third movement (I Pini del Gianicolo), signed very boldly below and dated onboard ship, July 18, 1928. The AMQS is mounted together with a small reproduction printed portrait photograph of the composer. A few small smudges and ink splatter; overall in fine condition. AMQS 7.5 x 7 inches (19 x 18 cm); photograph 2.5 x 3 inches (6.5 x 7.7 cm); total size 8.25 x 11.75 inches (20.9 x 29.7 cm).

The third movement of the piece calls for a recorded sound of a nightingale to be played over the orchestra's final notes - an artistic choice that caused some debate at its premiere in 1924!
