Signed score of Carter's early art song "The Rose Family," a setting of a poem by Robert Frost, signed and inscribed by Carter on the cover to the New York book collector and patron of American poetry, Eugene Delafield, and signed again above his printed name on the first page of music. On the inside cover, another hand has noted that the music was signed on May 17, 1949. 5 pp. 9 x 12 inches (22.8 x 32.5 cm).
Carter (1908-2012) was one of the major composers of the 20th and early 21st centuries. A two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner, his work has been hugely influential to generations of composers, though popular success came relatively late. Remarkably, his output seemed to increase after age 90, and he finished his last works only months before he died at nearly 104.
