Leschetizky, Theodor. (1830–1915) [Hamilton, Pauline Kruger. (1870–1919)]. Large Original Photograph with Autograph Quotation and AMQS. Original sepia profile bust portrait photograph of the great pianist and influential pedagogue, signed on the mount with an AMQS and a quotation: "Kein Leben ohne Kunst, keine Kunst ohne Leben" ("No life without art, no art without life.") Leschetizky has penned a short AMQS of one measure to the left of his photograph, and dated on the right: Vienna, May 31, 1913. Below the image, he has written out the marvelous quotation (from one of his own poems), inscribed the photograph to a Mrs. Marie Hoover Ellis, and boldly signed. The photograph is signed additionally by the important American photographer Pauline Kruger Hamilton, who served as court photographer in Vienna. The photograph itself measuring 9 x 6.75 inches, the mount 12.5 x 18 inches, and nicely presented in a period frame measuring 16 x 20.75 inches. The largest and most splendid signed Leschetizky photograph we have encountered.

Leschetizky, himself a Czerny pupil, was later the primary teacher of Paderewski, Gabrilowitsch, Schnabel and many others. His wife, Anna Yesipova, was also an important pianist and teacher.
