[Bostonia Orchestra]. Ladies' Orchestra - Large Format Photograph.

Large original photograph of the Bostonia Orchestra, a ladies' ensemble dressed in fabulous white gowns. Signed at the bottom left by J. Chickering and dated [18]98. 19 players are visible, playing string, woodwind, and brass instruments, and conducted by a woman in a dark dress. Together with an original postcard of the same ensemble, on which the conductor is identified as Belle Yeaton Renfrew.

Printed on card with some scratches, foxing, and a stain to the right edge; overall a crisp image in very good condition. 16.25 x 13 inches (41.5 x 33.1 cm). Postcard with light foxing, overall fine. 5.25 x 3.5 inches (13.5 x 9.1 cm).

The Bostonia Orchestra, according to the Pittsburgh Press in 1908, "has the reputation of being the best dressed organization of its kind before the public. It requires a special car to hold the baggage of this orchestra. There are 50 members in the company, and besides their musical instruments...there are extra trunks to carry the wardrobe. Mrs. Renfrew and her associates have many stage costumes and they all dress richly but in the best of taste."
