By the time he composed \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eRoméo\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e, Berlioz' love for her had become harsh reality: He was married to Harriet, but the match had proven unsuccessful and the two were effectively separated.  But \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eBerlioz had seen \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eRomeo and Juliet\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e at the Odéon during the 1827 Shakespeare season, and had\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e found himself overwhelmed, writing that \"more experiences of that kind would have killed me.\" \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eBerlioz conducted the first three performances of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eRoméo et Juliette\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e in Paris in November and December 1839.
