Nightingale, Florence. (1820-1910). Autograph Envelope to her Cousin. An original envelope in the hand of the English social reformer and founder of modern nursing, addressed to her cousin, Miss Nicholson, at Waverley Abbey, Farnham. The envelope is postmarked 1842, when Nightingale was twenty-two, newly received into London society, and had not yet declared her intention to become a nurse. The recipient is probably Marianne Nicholson, Florence's cousin and close friend and the sister of Henry Nicholson, who proposed to Florence in 1843 but was rejected. Marianne later ended their friendship.
Laid down on a slip with a small image of Nightingale tipped to the mount. Some chipping and wear at the edges, otherwise in fine condition. 10 x 6 cm.
