Menotti, Gian Carlo. (1911–2007). Three Autograph Musical Manuscripts from "Five Songs". An interesting set of three autograph fair copy manuscripts from the Italian composer of "Amahl," "The Medium" and others. The autograph manuscripts of three of the composer's "Five Songs" of 1983 given by Menotti to the conductor Spiros Argiris (1948 - 1996) at the time he was the Music Director of the Spoleto Festival. Folio. Each song scored for voice and piano, titled and signed at the head: The Idle gift, 2.5 pp; The Swing, 4 pp; The longest wait, 4 pp.

Spiros Argiris began his career in Germany and in the late 70s met Gian Carlo Menotti while conducting “The Consul” at the Athens Opera House. This led to an invitation to the Spoleto Festival in 1976 to conduct some performances of Tchaikovsky’s “Pique Dame”. Ten years later, Gian Carlo Menotti invited him to become the Music Director of both Spoleto Festivals in Italy and the US (Charleston), a post which he held from 1987 to 1992. Following Gian Carlo Menotti’s resignation from the Spoleto Festival USA, the board of Directors appointed Spiros Argiris in 1994 as the Artistic Director of Operatic and Symphonic activities of the US Festival which he held until his death.

Autograph musical manuscripts from Menotti are very rare to the market.
