Hammerstein, Oscar. (1895-1960). Signed Letter ordering Inscribed Copies of scores for his Children and Friends. 1-page TLS dated November 21, 1953, addressed to his music editor/publisher, Albert Sirmay, mentioning Richard Rodgers ("Dick") and requesting a group of scores to be inscribed on his behalf variously to his children and signed "Dad" and to others either from "Ockie" or "Oc," as well as ordering both additional hard cover and soft cover scores. In fine condition, 10 1/8" x 7 1/8".

It is not stated which scores Hammerstein is ordering, but "Me and Juliet," his sixth collaboration with Richard Rodgers, opened on Broadway on May 28, 1953 at the Majestic Theatre, and it is likely that the letter concerns this recently published score.

Albert Sirmay (Szirmai) was a Hungarian-born composer and publisher. He emigrated to New York in 1923 and took a post as music director for Chappell Music (a publishing house now owned by Warner Music Group). He was music editor for Hammerstein and other Broadway luminaries such as Cole Porter, and George Gershwin.
