Liszt, Franz. (1811–1886). Autograph Letter to the Venetian Music Professor Ugo Bassani. Autograph letter signed (“F. Liszt”), 1 page (8 x 4.75 in; 203 x 121 mm.), in French, Venice, December 1882, written to “My dear friend” [Ugo Bassani] on a blank overleaf of a handwritten letter in Italian from Bassani. Slight spotting and toning; mounting remnants on verso of attached overleaf. Liszt writes in full: "My dear friend, True friendship has the characteristic that it gets better with the years. For more than forty years now, I’ve been very friendly with you and will remain so, as long as I live. F. Liszt." Together with a postcard photograph of Liszt, in profile.

Liszt corresponded extensively with (and wrote several extremely flattering letters to) the Venetian composer and music professor Ugo Bassani (1851 - 1914), some of which are published in La Mara’s Liszts Briefe (vol. II). More recent scholarship by Rossana Dalmonte has documented the remarkable amount of material referring to the relationship between Bassani and Liszt, including Liszt’s letters to Bassani, Liszt’s manuscripts (La Lugubre Gondola, inscribed to Bassani), and portraits, which confirm Liszt’s friendly attitude towards Bassani and his interest in his music.
