[Berg, Alban. (1885 - 1935)] Malcles, Jean-Denis. (1912-2002). "'Lulu d'Alban Berg" - ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR COSTUME DESIGN FROM FIRST FRENCH PRODUCTION. Original watercolor painting of Lulu in costume as a dancer, 23 x 31 cm, on heavy paper, signed in blue ink, inscribed in pencil "au Docteur Baculard très amicalement". Mounting remnants around the edges, otherwise fine.
Composed from 1929–1935, the composer died before completing the third and final act, and the opera was premièred incomplete in 1937. In Paris, the work was first seen in the Gunther Rennert production from Hamburg in 1960. The first French production was in 1969, at the Opéra-Comique, in a production by Louis Ducreux, sets and costumes by Jean-Denis Malclès and under the direction of Manuel Rosenthal. The present design by Malcles apparently dates from that original production.
