Stern, Isaac. (1920-2001) . Early Signed Photograph to the Violinmaker Kurt Jacob . An extraordinarily early signed original sepia photograph of the masterful violinist, inscribed and signed ca. 1930, at the very start of his long career. The child prodigy has inscribed "To my dear Mr. and Mrs Jacobs, Isaac Stern." 8 x 10 inches, a crisp image in fine condition, signed also lower right by the photographer ("Artcraft / S.F."). Together with photographs of violinists Carl Kalash (N.B.C. studio player) and Louis Ford (2nd violin of the San Francisco Chamber Society), each similarly inscribed to Kurt Jacob.

Stern was born into a Volhynian-Jewish family in Kremenets, then in the Soviet Ukraine (the year after his birth it again became part of Poland) and was fourteen months old when his family moved to San Francisco, where he received his first music lessons from his mother. In 1928, he enrolled at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied until 1931 before going on to study privately with Louis Persinger. The violin repairer and restorer and maker Kurt Jacob (1892 - 1954) opened his shop in San Francisco at 46 Kearney St. in 1929. The present photograph is from his collection and one of the other included photographs is inscribed to him under his full name, and with date of 1932. We have not been able to ascertain whether Stern actually played a violin by Jacob at this very early stage of his training or whether his connection to Jacob was through his work as an instrument repairman.

This is the earliest signed photograph of Stern we have ever seen.
