Schoenberg, Arnold. (1874-1951). Original 1933 Photograph "On the Eve of His Departure for the United States". Original photograph of the influential composer, shown at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Allatini in Paris on the eve of his departure to the United States to take up his teaching position at the Malkin Conservatory in Boston. He is seen here, left to right, with: Rudi Goehr, Schoenberg's youngest pupil; Mrs. Allatini, founder of the Foyer Henri Heine for Jewish Intellectuals Relief in Paris; Frau Kolisch, Mother of Frau Schoenberg; Frau Schoenberg; the composer and Monsieur Allatini. In fine condition. Stamped Oct 31, 1933 on the verso. 9.5 x 7.25 inch (17.25 x 23.5 cm).
Schoenberg arrived in Boston in early November 1934 to teach at the Malkin Conservatory. His decision to leave Europe, with political developments there already having cost him his job, was painful, but ameliorated by the offer to teach at a small, high level conservatory in Boston being organized by cellist Joseph Malkin and including also on the faculty, Egon Petri and Nicholas Slonimsky.
