[Joachim, Joseph. (1831–1907)] Reindahl, Knute. (1857–1934) [Kreisler, Fritz. (1875–1962)]

Joseph Joachim Violin Scroll for Fritz Kreisler

Highly unusual carved violin scroll with head of Joseph Joachim, 7 5/8 inches tall, signed "K. Reindahl" on the back and in fine condition.

A resident of Madison, Wisconsin, Knute Reindahl distinguished himself as an ornamental carver and instrument-maker. He became a prolific maker of sonorous and ornately carved violins, violas, and cellos and in 1914 was unanimously elected by his peers as the first president of the newly formed American Academy of Violin Makers.  In 1922, Reindahl carved a head of Joachim to adorn a violin he constructed for presentation to the great violinist Fritz Kreisler by the City of Madison in recognition of Kreisler's attaining American citizenship. The present scroll is a duplicate by Reindahl himself of that scroll. (9942)
