Wagner, Richard. (1813–1883)

Lohengrin: romantische Oper in drei Akten von Richard Wagner; vollständiger Klavierauszug von Theodor Uhlig. [SIGNED BY JOHANNA JACHMANN-WAGNER and with Original Early Performance Programs and Clippings]

Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel. [ca. 1874]. Title, vb; Cast and List of Scenes; Libretto by the composer: p. 1-10 (1st sequence) [Lithographed]; 3 - 237 pp.[PN] 21500. Engraved reprint of the first edition, with the price 8 Thlr. Mk. 24, and "Richard Wagner's Werke. Band IV" on the front board. Contemporary red textured cloth with decorative titling in gilt to upper boards. In very good condition.

From the collection of noted early Wagner scholar Mary Burrell, who published "Richard Wagner his life and work" in the year of her death, 1898. Her celebrated collection was dispersed by Christies in New York in 1978 but the present score was not offered in the catalogue. Her copy of Lohengrin, with interesting early posters and other material and some annotations.

Signed by Johanna Jachmann-Wagner (1826 - 1894) in ink on the cast page next to the role of Ortrud and extensive performance markings in red and blue and graphite pencil to the part of Ortrud and elsewhere, one page inscribed by Burrell "Heard Lohengrin on the 5th Oct 84 + on the 6th a grand lesson from Johanna in this scene of Ortrud. Her singing of it made me feel terrified in cold blood," the markings throughout evidently based on the lesson with Wagner. Niece of the composer, the important mezzo-soprano was the original performer, and in some respects the inspiration, of the character of Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, as well as the original intended performer of Brünnhilde in The Ring.

Laid down to the front and rear free endpages and blank verso of the title pages are the following:

Handwritten "Ammerkung" in the hand of Burrell, "copied from the first 'Textbuch' of Lohengrin printed for the first performance, at Weimar, 28th August 1850."
