Wagner, Cosima. (1837-1930) [Eva Chamberlain [Wagner - von Bülow]. (1867 - 1942)]

Autograph Letter from Bayreuth to Karl Pohlig

An interesting letter from the daughter of Franz Liszt who was later the wife of Richard Wagner and, after his death, the director of the Bayreuth Festival for 31 years. 2 pages, 8vo. Dated 28 March, 1895. Addressed to "Herr Kappelmeister Karl Pohlig" in Hamburg, mentioning Siegfried and discussing Felix Mottl, Willi Birrenkoven and others for future performances. With envelope addressed to Pohlig. The letter written and signed on behalf of her mother by Eva Chamberlain Wagner. Tranlsated in full:

"My dear Friend, Thank you so much for your warm interest in Siegfried's course of life, which, you may be assured, is of utmost comfort to me! Keiure/Keinre/Keivse(?) was telling me of a very beautiful performance of Orpheus under your leadership, and he was delighted with his contact with you! Weimar! To Leave, to Release, to Relieve, d'Albert, d'Bauer! All that under the mantel of tradition! May God give His blessing! But don't you want to turn to Mottl who is often being asked? As for Birrenkoven, for now I must refrain from considering him, as I am looking for large figures. If I do not find these, then of course I would turn to Birrenkoven. Please give him my best regards and thank him for his good disposition. We are already looking forward to your visit and the beautiful chamber music! Give your dear wife our best regards, thank her for her dear letter to my daughter, and best regards to you, my dear conductor, with warmest esteem! C. Wagner. Bayreuth, March 28, 95." (9711)
