[Jazz & Blues] [Speckled Red] Perryman, Rufus. (1892 - 1973)

"The Dirty Dozen" - Autograph Mansucript

Autograph piano-vocal manuscript for Speckled Red's spectacular "The Dirty Dozen," penned on his behalf by James "Kid" Alston for the State Street Music Publishing Co., in 1929. Accompanied by a typed lyric sheet, on State Street Music Publishing Company stationery. Manuscript in fine condition, with one small piece of clear tape on the recto edge, the bifold sheet separated along the spine. The lyric sheet is in excellent condition.
From the collection of the late pianist and piano roll collector scholar Mike Montgomery who acquired this originally from the State Street Publishing Co. archives.

The American blues and boogie-woogie piano player and singer Speckled Red, born Rufus Perryman, is most noted for his recordings of "The Dirty Dozens", with exchanges of insults and vulgar remarks that have long been a part of African American folklore. Although the lyrics were sung rather than spoken, with its elaborate word play and earthy subject matter, "The Dirty Dozens" is considered in some respects an ancestor to rap music. (9662)
