Kapell, William. (1922-1953)

Autograph Letter

Autograph letter from the great pianist whose flourishing career was cut tragically short by a plane crash on the way back from Australia. Copland wrote of him: “I cannot conceive of his ever having given a dull performance – an erratic one, perhaps, a misguided or stylistically incongruous one maybe, but invariably one that was electric and alive.”

1 page, letterhead of the Armstrong Hotel in Fort Collins, CO. n.d. In full: "Thank you for a delightful visit to Peoria. I enjoyed staying in your home immensely. Sorry I was such a 'wet blanket' with my flue, etc. I feel a bit more lively, but am not done with it yet. My best wishes to Fred and Harold Jr. and to Mr. Harsch. Tell Mr. Harsch I was really delighted to see him composing. It's wonderful - Sincerely, Willy Kapell." Mailing creases, chipped edge, some splitting along the right side repaired with tape on the verso and with staining/show-through in that area.

One of only a handful of autograph letters from Kapell we've ever seen on the market. (9487)
