Gershwin, George. (1898–1937)

Original Drawing and Autograph Signature

Original drawing by the composer, accomplished in pencil and mounted with an autograph signature clipped from a check. Gershwin has identified the portrait as "Irving Hochstader."

Gershwin was an enthusiastic amateur artist as well as an avid art collector. In his biography of the composer, Edward Jablonski relates that Ira Gershwin collected various signatures and doodles from his brother and would frame them with Gershwin's checks and present them to friends (p. 368). The present example is in excellent condition and remains in the original vintage frame, the same frame used by Ira in similar known examples. Paper with sketch has slight tear to upper left corner, but is otherwise in fine condition. Drawing measures 4.25 x 6.25 inches (11 x 16cm.); total with frame is 9 x 13 inches (23 x 33 cm.). (9480)
