Signed by the photographer on the verso in small handwriting lower left "photograph by Carl Van Vechten/ March 28, 1933-XII c: 4". There is also a signature "George Gershwin" on the back. The signature is in the handwriting of Irene Gallagher who was the Girl Friday of the publisher Max Dreyfus and knew all of the up and coming young composers of the day, including Gershwin. She was Irene of the song "Good Night, Irene", as issued in sheet music with her picture on the cover and popularized by Leadbelly. This photograph is from her estate. (9477)
