Piano-vocal score in 3 parts, performance markings in graphite, red and blue pencil throughout, the ownership stamp on the first page of each volume "Richard Strauss / Garmisch / Zoppritzstr, 42," two volumes signed "Rudolf Hartmann" by the important German opera producer and impressario who was apparently given these volumes by Strauss and whose markings are found throughout.


Hartmann was chief resident producer at Altenberg 1924, Nuremberg 1928–34 and 1946–52, Berlin State Opera 1934–8, as well as for many prods. at Salzburg Fest. 1931–69. He was especially associated with Clemens Krauss and the operas of Richard Strauss at Munich as chief producer 1938–44 and intendant 1953–67. He produced Die Meistersinger at Bayreuth 1951 and at Covent Garden, produced Elektra (1953), Ring cycle (1954), Arabella (1965), and Die Frau ohne Schatten (1967). He wsa the author of "Richard Strauss, the Staging of his Operas and Ballets." (9458)
