This cycle was composed while Poulenc stayed with his sister at Le Tremblay. The first performance was a private event in October of 1948 at the home of Marie-Blanche de Polignac. The composer's settings of Apollinaire's "poems in the form of pictures," a feature which by necessity is lost once the text is fitted to musical notation. (9168)
