1874 Vanity Fair Portrait

A spirited portrait of the British composer best known for his collaborations on more than a dozen classic comic operas with librettist W. S. Gilbert. A fine chromo-lithograph caricature published in the English weekly magazine Vanity Fair on March 14, 1874. The portrait is by Carlo Pellegrini, known as "Ape," one of the most famous of the outstanding caricaturists who published in the magazine. In excellent condition, 15 x 10.5 inches. New acid-free matt and backing; overall matt size 12 1/2" x 17 3/4" (8738)
