Grainger, Percy. (1882–1961)

Signed Music to Mark Twain's Daughter!

London: Schott. 1912. First printing. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by Grainger on the front wrapper “For Madame Clara Gabrilowitsch with very cordial greetings from Percy Grainger, Dec. 9. 1914.”

Clara Gabrilowitsch, formerly “Clara Clemens,” was Mark Twain’s daughter. A contralto concert singer, she managed his estate and guarded his legacy after his death as his only surviving child. She was married first to the pianist and conductor Ossip Gabrilowitsch, then to conductor Jacques Samossoud after Gabrilowitsch's death. She wrote biographies of Gabrilowitsch and of her father.

An interesting association copy from the Australian-born pianist, conductor, and composer best known for his folk settings and colorfully experimental works. (861)
