[Rachmaninoff, Sergei. (1873–1943)] Cliburn, Van. (b. 1934)

Original Photograph at Rachmaninoff's Grave

Original 9 x 7 inch 1958 wire photograph of the American pianist who won worldwide recognition that year after winning the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, at the height of the Cold War. He is shown planting "a lilac bush he brought back from the Soviet Union beside the grave of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff at Kensico Cemetery here May 31st. Cliburn placed soil from the grave into a container and gave it to a representative of the Soviet Embassy for shipment to Russia." In fine condition, an unusual and moving photograph. (8494)
