Gershwin, George. (1898–1937)

An American in Paris

New York: New World Music. [1929]. First edition. 4to. 35pp. Original tan printed wrappers, upper cover decoratively lettered, back wrapper advertising "George Gershwin's Famous Compositions," including "Rhapsody in Blue" (1924) and "Preludes" for Piano (1926), covers loosening, minor soiling and spotting.

Rare First Edition of the piano score of one of the composer's most enduringly popular works, premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1928 with the composer at the keyboard, the first modern score to feature "taxi horns" (first appearance on p.3), the musical basis for the very successful 1951 film. The piano score of "An American in Paris" is unexpectedly rare; American Book Prices Current records only the Goodwin copy, (sold in 1977) in the last quarter century. (8441)
