The musical which opened on Broadway 09/22/64, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and produced by Harold Prince, was a smash hit for many years, racking up a record-setting total of 3,242 performances in its original run. The production was extraordinarily profitable and highly acclaimed. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine, including Best Musical, score, book, direction and choreography.
