Casals, Pablo. (1876-1973)
Signed Program with Quotation from the St. Matthew Passion
Vintage Carnegie Hall program from a performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, with the Festival Casals Orchestra, members of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus under the direction of Robert Shaw, and soloists Haeflinger, Warfield, Forrester, Iglesias, and Berberian, all under the direction of Pablo Casals. The inside blank front cover inscribed in blue ink, likely in the hand of Marta Casals, with the 8-line text of "Choral 21-23: 53 (Psalm 375, Paul Gerhardt 1607–1676)" and signed below by Pablo Casals. In very fine condition, with light toning around the edges of a few pages. 7 x 10 inches (17.8 x 25.5 cm).
A most unusual item from the great Spanish composer, conductor, and cellist, one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, also well known as a humanitarian and very closely connected to the music of Bach.
