"Fantasmagories" - Inscribed with an Autograph Musical Quotation

Paris: Au Ménestrel Heugel & Cie. 1906. First edition. An uncommon signed presentation copy from the renowned French pianist, composer and pedagogue of Hungarian birth. An attractive art nouveau edition, inscribed on the decorative title page to the first prize winner for piano at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux: "Pour Melle. Bergès / bien sympathique souvenir / 1918 / I. Philipp" and adding a two measure AMQS above. Foxing over cover, more minor scattered foxing and some pencil markings throughout, front seam partially split, else fine.


A student of Georges Mathias (a Chopin student) and of Saint-Saens, he impressed Liszt, Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky with his playing and was celebrated for his beautiful touch and immaculate technique. A renowned teacher, his students included Nikita Magaloff, Guiomar Novaes, Jean Francaix, Yvonne Loriod, Beveridge Webster, Aaron Copland and many others! (7930)
