Satie, Erik. (1866-1925)

Sports et Divertissements

Paris: Publications Lucien Vogel. 1914. First edition. 45 pages, oversize oblong folio (c.39 x 43.5cms), one of 900 copies of which this is one of 675 on paper, unnumbered, music printed in black on red staves in facsimile of the composer's extraordinary caligraphic autograph manuscript, colour pochoir frontispiece ("Comédie Italienne"), black and white illustrated titles to each piece by Charles Martin, as issued in the publisher's printed portfolio. In fine condition, a few edges of the leaves nicked, the fragile portfolio splitting along a few places and with chipped corners, generally sound.

As art historian Roger Shattuck has written, this folio remains "perhaps the sole example of a modern work that combines, precariously but successfully, calligraphy, painting, poetry, and music." (7476)
