Bliss, Arthur. (1891 - 1975)

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra - Signed Presenation Score

London: Novello. 1946. Miniature full score. 199 pp. [PN] 17104. Inscribed by the composer on the first free endpage: "To Herman Linder, the perfect host with thanks from Arthur Bliss / March 25th 1955." Printed blue wrappers, a little toned but otherwise fine throughout.

The Piano Concerto was composed for the pianist Solomon who gave the world premiere at the World's Fair in New York in June 1939. Bliss and his family attended the performance and then stayed on in the US for a holiday, but while they were here, the Second World War broke out. Bliss initially stayed in America, teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, but made the hazardous Atlantic crossing to England in 1941 and became director of music at the BBC from 1942 - 1944.
